This is a washed community lot brought to us by our good friends at Red Fox Coffee Merchants. This coffee comes from Chimaltenango, both a department and a city, about two hours west of Guatemala City. The various growing regions of Guatemala (Antigua, Huehuetenango, etc) typically harvest coffee between November and April and produce about 2.5% of the world’s coffee.

San Jose Poaquil is a town of ~30,000 people set high in the soaring Sierra Madre mountains, about 2000 meters above sea level. Coffees from this area represent the typical and loved Guatemalan profile; boasting warm sugar browning notes, baked apple, and soft citrus like orange peel. However, the top lots from this area sing with complex florality and heightened acidity as well. Typica can be found as the most commonly grown variety here, but there are pockets of both Bourbon and Caturra as well.

Smallholder farms with less than 1 hectare of growing area are most common in Chimaltenango. Many farmers harvest their own cherries and take them to nearby receiving stations where they are processed and then transported to Antigua for drying. As a result of these small farmer’s hard work, we are provided a wonderfully complex and delicious, mixed varietal, community lot that tastes like cooked fruit and french silk pie, with a wildflower honey sweetness.
