Our second offering from Kenya this year is a community lot from the slopes of Mount Kenya, provided to us by Red Fox Coffee Merchants. This lot, #1, from the Karatina Station is a community lot made up of SL28, SL34, Riuru 11, and Batian varieties. The Karatina factory is a part of a larger co-op called Barichu. Barichu Farmers Co-op is located in Mathira East District in Nyeri County. It is currently composed of 4 factories or wet mills - Karindundu, Karatina, Gaturiri, and Gatomboya. It has over 7,200 registered members and produces 3 million - 5 million kg of coffee per year. Barichu FCS is situated in the town of Karatina about 124 kilometers north of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya in East Africa. The catchment is within Nyeri County on the slopes of Mount Kenya at an altitude of 1700 masl.
We love Kenyan coffee because of the country’s commitment to highly-scrutinized processing and flavor profiles seldom found anywhere else in the world. This is a bright, very complex and acidic coffee that we think tastes like Nectarines, Oolong tea, Star Anise, and Toasted Marshmallow.
